Label TextOn May 11, 1801 Pepe Hillo had performed several times in the Madrid bullring, alternating with other matadors. When he was about to despatch the seventh bull of the day, which was named Il Barbudo—or “the bearded”—he was knocked to the ground, gored in the stomach and flipped high into the air. Many of the Spanish nobility were present to witness his death, and Queen Maria Luisa left a detailed account of the event in a letter written to the prime minister. By royal decree, Spain observed three days of national mourning over Pepe Hillo’s death.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UKOn View
