Label TextThe first televised presidential debates took place on September 26, 1960 in New York City. The candidates met in a CBS television studio for discussion moderated by newsman Howard K. Smith. Voters enjoyed an unprecedented visual familiarity with the candidates, as the role of media shifted in American politics. Days before, Vice President Nixon had been hospitalized, and was also fatigued from campaigning. For the first debate, he looked thin and pale, with a stubble of beard. By contrast Kennedy appeared tan, healthy, and relaxed and was well prepared.ProvenanceDavid Davis
