Label TextIn Mexico City the American runner Tommie Smith won the 200-meter track event in world-record time. Peter Norman of Australia took the silver medal, and John Carlos of the United States placed third. On the award podium the two Americans raised black-gloved fists as the national anthem played. They were shoeless to symbolize black poverty, while Smith wore a black scarf and Carlos a necklace of beads to stand for African Americans who had been lynched. All three wore Olympic Project for Human Rights badges, and were later ejected from the games.On View
