DescriptionBlackened, with two-piece construction, rolled over along medium-height comb, and riveted together on both peaks. Brim arches sharply at anterior and posterior. Base of skull originally encircled with 12 rivets within brass rosettes of six petals alternating with plain and stippled decoration. Fragments of a leather lining-band remain beneath inner terminals of rivets. Six rivets and mounts are lacking. Iron plume-holder is fitted to posterior basal edge of comb, and secured with a pair of rivets. The brim has a plain, inwardly-turned edge.
ProvenanceArchduke Eugen's Armory at Festung Hohenwerfen (Salzburg, Austria). Purchased by John W. Higgins on 2 March 1927 at Archduke Eugen sale at Anderson Galleries (NYC), lot #412. Price paid: $12.50. Given to the Armory on 8 January 1947. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
