DescriptionBlack figure amphora with lid. Neck decorated with palmettes and lotus chain. Side A: Herakles killing Kyknos with Athena behind him. Ares approaching on right. Fulmen above and between contestants. Side B: Herakles standing right on platform playing kithara with Athena left and Hermes right. Palmettes divide side A from side B. Two leaf (Olive or laurel) chains ring base.Label TextThe warrior hero Herakles stabs the bandit Kyknos who is protected by his father Ares, god of war. On both sides of the jar, Herakles wears the lion skin with its sharp teeth above his forehead and its paws dangling.
