DescriptionBlackened leather, curved for blade, with deep brass mounts at ends. Sewn closed along reverse face. Mount at point with narrow, asymmetrical drag & bracket-cut at edge, encircled by pair of double, narrow, engraved lines. Mount at mouth similarly formed with narrow outwardly turned flange at opening, bordered below with engraved lines on obverse only. Once fitted with stud for frog, now lost, & the hole flush-filled.
ProvenanceArchduke Eugen's Armory, Fortress Hohenwerfen, Salzburg, Austria purchased by John W. Higgins on March 1, 1927 from Anderson Galleries (NY), their no. 5. Given to the Museum on July 1, 1954. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
