DescriptionMaroon-colored wool, with cloth appliqué & brocade. Long, front-opening coat with single button & tab, extending to mid-thigh, with single vent in rear, and upstanding . Sleeveless, with deep arm openings, & wide shoulders with broad yellow epaulettes having red wool & gold thread overlay in zig-zag pattern. Edges trimmed with blue, & having white cherry blossoms. Blue & grey floral print brocade lining. Centered between shoulders is embroidered white flowery diamond ("hanabishi") as used by the Ouchi and Inoue clans.ProvenanceProbably acquired by Bashford Dean on behalf of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (their 10.18.73, later 10.187.75) in about 1910. Purchased by Museum at Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc. (NY), 15 November 1956, part of lot 195. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
