Label TextBorn in the city of Bordeaux to an affluent family, Redon gained notoriety when his drawings were described in Joris-Karl Huysmans’s 1884 novel, Against Nature, which argued in favor of decadent design and the irrational. Redon’s imaginative works are connected with many movements around the turn of the 20th century, notably Symbolism. Here, the young woman and boldly formed, central bouquet embody the essence of springtime. In the 1890s, Redon began to favor oil painting and pastels over charcoal and lithography, lightening his previously dark palette to include vivid jewel tones.
