DescriptionWhen Abstract Expressionism was the cutting-edge style, a new generation of artists emerged to join the pioneers of action painting. They reinvigorated Greenwich Village society, imploring the older artists to join in. Gathering in bistros like the Cedar Tavern and the Five Spot they socialized and exchanged ideas, with poets, writers, and jazz musicians, as well as fellow artists. Evident in this glimpse of a typical evening at the Five Spot are David Smith, Helen Frankenthaler, Larry Rivers, Grace Hartigan, and the poet and influential museum curator Frank O'Hara.ProvenanceRichard A.
