Label TextThis painting was formerly ascribed to Joos van Cleve and does bear many similarities to his work and that of his shop. The mountain landscape, however, is foreign to Joos van Cleve's style and suggests instead another Antwerp painter, Jan Willens de Kock. Without attaching a name, one can conclude that the painter of this panel was probably active in Antwerp between about 1525 and 1535 when he could have known both masters' work. Saint Jerome, a Doctor of the Church who lived about 347-419(?) A.D., is supposed to have spent four years in the wilderness, doing penance. As a model of piety and self-castigation, he was a popular subject in Netherlandish art of the sixteenth century.ProvenanceRamsay, Rangabé, and others sale, Rudolph Lepke (auctioneer), Berlin, February 7, 1911, no. 89, to Stiller; the Ehrich Galleries, New York; sold to Mr. and Mrs. Frank C.
