Label TextThe rocky coast at Prout's Neck was a rich source of inspiration to Homer. In watercolors such as this one, a few confident strokes convey the waves breaking against the rocks. Faint pencil lines enriched with gray tones indicate the spray that rises up as a focal point to the right of center. As with his late oil paintings, Homer equally strove to capture the vigor and force of the North Atlantic in watercolor. In works such as Prout’s Neck, Surf on Rocks, he used a combination of transparent and opaque washes to convey the different density of natural materials. He applied delicate areas of transparent color to represent the sea’s spray, and much heavier, opaque washes to capture the water-slick surfaces of the rocky coastline.ProvenanceEstate of the artist; (E.L.
