Label TextHomer painted this watercolor on his second trip to Bermuda. Unlike his Bahamian works which emphasize residents' day-to-day lives, the Bermudian landscapes are characterized by their vibrant, almost glowing palette. Bermuda Settlers, featuring an inquisitive hog gazing at the viewer from a lime-green island pasture, reveals Homer at his most playful. Open washes of saturated color are punctuated by the occasional dab of red, suggesting tropical birds in the trees above and blossoms in the grass below.
