Label TextCoral Formation is typical of Homer's watercolors of Bermuda, which emphasize the brilliant light and expanses of land that he found there. His technique is spare and confident at this point late in his career. Homer employs the white of the sheet in relatively large areas to convey the gleaming surfaces of the distinctive coral projections. He allows his washes to flow wet into wet, creating pooling and accidental effects in the sky and water. A few dashes of red paint create the uniforms of British military figures at the left, which indicate scale and offer pleasing color accents within the composition.ProvenanceEstate of the artist; (E.L.
