Label TextOne of the artist’s finest early works, this painting appears to date from the late 1640s. Influenced by Rembrandt and his followers, Van der Poel employs a concentrated light that gives his exterior scene the appearance of an interior. Featured in the strongly illuminated foreground is an eclectic still life of used and broken objects. The son of a goldsmith, Van der Poel was baptized in Delft, where he entered the painters’ guild in 1650. Until 1654 he concentrated on winter landscapes and canal and coastal scenes, as well as exteriors and interiors of stables and cottages. After 1654, at about which time he settled in Rotterdam, Van der Poel painted mainly scenes connected with the gunpowder explosion that destroyed a large part of his home town (October 12, 1654).ProvenanceMr. and Mrs. Eugene Bernat, Upton MA
