Label TextThis painting is characteristic of Ruysdael's landscapes of the early 1640s. Earlier, he had favored compositions with strong diagonal accents, but here he stabilizes the scene with controlled horizontals and verticals, anticipating a trend in Dutch landscape painting after the middle of the century. Salomon van Ruysdael ranks as one of the leading landscapists of his generation, along with Jan van Goyen and Pieter Molyn. He worked mainly in Haarlem. He was the uncle of Jacob van Ruisdael, who is represented in the next gallery by a seascape.ProvenanceEugene Bottenweiser (late Bolton), London England; sold to the Worcester Art Museum, January 17, 1920.
