DescriptionThis side chair is an example of the Asian influence on American decorative design in the second half of the eighteenth century. The sharp lines of this object are stark in comparison with the curving forms of contemporary Queen Anne furniture. It has a Yokeback design with a solid splat that narrows into its shoe on the bottom railing, and the crest rail forms a rectilinear convex shape that extends into pointed "ears" on either edge. The stiles are continuous with the rear Stump legs, givng the chair a slightly cantered profile. Neither the front Marlborough legs nor the four exterior stretchers are carved, and all are rectangular.
