DescriptionThis Sheraton or Federal style armchair is part of a set of two arm and four side chairs . It has a square, Banister back, with a curved crest rail and squared shoulders. The frame of the back is reeded, and the four spindles or banisters are carved in a reedlike shape with rectagular rosettes in the center. The rear stiles are continous with the rear Stump legs, giving the armchair a curved profile. These are joined to the seat rail, probably with mortise and tenon, but the technique is not visible due to the replacement horsehair upolstery secured with double rows of decorative brass tacks that have been aged to match the fabric. The armrest curves away from the chair, then slopes downward into the supporting spindle where the two pieces are joined at the knuckle. The anterior surface of the spindle and knuckles are beaded on both edges. These are joined to the trapezoidal seat frame and protrude in a rectangular block where they are attached. The front Marlbrough legs are also beaded on both exterior surfaces, but the interior surfaces are plain. The "H" stretchers and rear stretcher are also not carved.
