The figures in this tavern interior partake in drinking and smoking, which were considered to be related vices in seventeenth-century Holland. Like alcohol, tobacco was believed to induce a form of drunkenness. Tobacco was relatively new to the Netherlands, having been introduced in the late sixteenth century. Initially regarded by some as medicinally beneficial, it was soon generally condemned by the moralists and religious leaders of the day.ProvenanceColl.
