The attribution of this portrait and its companion piece (Portrait of a Woman, 1956.17), both dated 1617, is supported by the close similarity to one of Van der Voort's group portraits dated 1618 in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
Born in South Netherlands, Van der Voort emigrated to Amsterdam with is father in 1592, where he was mainly active as a portraitist. His works give a good idea of the level of portraiture in Amsterdam before Rembrandt arrived on the scene.ProvenanceArthur de Heuvel Gallery, BrusselsOn View
