Label TextWhile the subject matter is uncertain, the winged sea creature at the bottom of this composition suggests that the figure might be the sea god Poseidon or the ancient hero Perseus killing a dragon. Although it does not correspond to a known finished sculpture, this object, which provides valuable insight into the artist’s working processes, is probably a sculptor's sketch. Impressions by a pointed tool appear in the heads of the figure and sea creature and the artist's fingerprints are visible throughout, most noticeable just beneath the left foot.ProvenancePaul Bottenwieser, New York
