Label TextFlemish wedding processions, as depicted here, publically announced the union of two families before the private, religious ceremony was held at a church. The bride wears her hair down and uncovered except for the wedding headpiece. The groom, wearing a wedding crown atop his bright red cap, is followed by two men, probably the fathers of the bridal couple.
Pieter Brueghel the Younger devoted himself almost entirely to reproducing works by his father, Pieter Brueghel the Elder. This painting is one of eight known versions attributed to the son.ProvenanceCount Leon Mniszech, Paris; sale, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 9-11 April 1902, no. 97. (La Promenade, illus);MM.
