Ellis Collection, 1940.37a,b Filippo Lippi was a major figure in Florentine painting in the fifteenth century. He worked both on panel and in fresco, mainly in Florence but also in Prato and Spoleto. He took vows as a Carmelite in 1421 but later left the order to marry. Unlike Fra Angelico, he received many private commissions, especially from the Medici. He had an active workshop, and studio assistance can be noted in many of his works. These two panels are part of a group of eighteen, which were together in a private collection in the nineteenth century.
