Label TextOutdoor picnic scenes were common in the artwork of Prendergast and the Impressionists before him, reflecting the growing popularity of parks as cities became more densely populated. The bright watercolor paint and white paper give the impression of a sunny summer day in Gloucester. The woman and two men pictured are seated in the same position as those in Edouard Manet’s painting Luncheon on the Grass, except that Prendergast tamed his work by clothing his figures.ProvenanceCharles Prendergast; Lizzie P.
