Label TextHomer's interest in the masculine world of fishing and hunting, of confronting nature's untamed power, is foremost in this watercolor. Three canoes filled with fishermen and guides flow through the treacherous waters of the Saguenay River, near Quebec City. Responding to the excitement of watercolors such as this one, an art critic wrote in 1898, "One feels the splendid swirl of the icy waters and the swift rush of the canoes down the foaming rapids--one almost hears the hurried cries of the French guides as they steer the frail birch-bark canoes through the seething billows...."
