DescriptionChair, part of a set of two arm and four side chairs (1907.97.1-6).
Label TextThe deep reddish-brown color of this chair exemplifies mahogany’s admirable aging properties. It is characteristic of Sheraton-style dining chairs, which favor rectilinear forms over the curved, shield-shaped backs of contemporaneous Hepplewhite chairs. The slatted back features an arched top rail that echoes the bowed seat. The four column-like spindles are carved with sheaves of wheat and rosettes and end in a lower rail that sits a few inches above the seat. The molded front legs would have invited the interplay of light and shadow in a brightly lit Federal dining room.ProvenanceStephen Salisbury III;
