Label TextThe first two plates of La Tauromaquia portray the earliest Spanish settlers hunting bulls in the countryside. Rather than chasing the beast on horseback, a team of men roped the bull, and tried to restrict its movements by tethering it to a stump while a mounted lancer killed the bull with his spear. Both of the first two prints were etched on the backs of plates carrying an etching that Goya had rejected. As a result, he may have explored the origins of bullfighting in prints done after the series was already underway.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
