Label TextGoya identifies the origin of the matador’s cape—or muleta—as a burnous, a long woolen cloak worn by desert Arabs. He based his representation of Moors on the only Muslims he knew first hand, Mamluk warriors of the Napoleonic cavalry. A caste of Turkish warriors who were originally slaves, the Mamluks rose to political power over much of the Middle East from the eighth to nineteenth centuries. Napoleon formed a Mamluk cavalry corps, which were among the French army that terrorized Spain during the Peninsular Wars of 1808-1814.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UKOn View
