DescriptionSpinach-green nephrite Circular Table Screen with Mountain Scene
Label Text2006-03-04: Circular Table Screen with Mountain Scene Nephrite; Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911), 18th century Gift of Maria and John Dirlam, 1999.433 There was a high demand for sumptuous table screens during the reign of the Qianlong emperor (r. 1736-95). Like the rectangular screen exhibited in this case, this round screen is a superb example of the skill and sophistication of the 18th century jade artisans who catered to the imperial household and to wealthy officials and scholars. Emulating round album-leaf paintings created by court painters, the scene reflects the aspiration of scholars for a life of elegant seclusion in the mountains. Two old men (immortals or scholar-hermits) are shown standing on a rocky mountain ledge, high above a raging river. One of them points to a vessel of elixir or wine on a table in a pavilion; a crane is depicted flying towards the pavilion with a message in its mouth.
