Label TextFalces is a country town lying beneath a soaring plateau in Navarre . For centuries townspeople gathered to watch the livestock descending from summer pastures to the riverside village. At some point this event merged with the late August festival honoring the Virgin of Nieva. Then, young men started to test their bravery and agility by racing the animals down a steep, 800-meter path. To excel in the still-popular Encierro del Pilón, a contestant has to outpace or outmaneuver the plummeting animals. Over time their refined diversionary skills influenced matadors.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
