Label TextIn Goya’s time there were three famous bullfighters known as “Martincho,” who took the name from their teacher of the same name. This print represents Antonio Ebassum who came from the village of Ejea de los Caballeros in Zaragoza. He was a key figure in the transition from mounted bullfighting to the face-to-face contest on the ground. Goya’s representation of Martincho’s exploits made him, along with the bulls he contested, one of the first matadors in history whose portrait was widely distributed.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
