Label TextThis small, full-length portrait, dated 1659, shows how Netscher, early in his career, closely imitated his teacher Gerard ter Borch. The style, pose and format are all derived from his master's exquisite portrait "in little." Netscher's later predilection for depicting his sitters in settings that include columns, bas-reliefs, swatches of drapery, and vistas of distant landscapes is already anticipated here. The place and date of Netscher's birth have not been firmly established, but there is reason to believe he was born at either Heidelberg or Prague between 1635 and 1639. He first studied with the obscure artist Hendrik Coster at Arnheim and then with Gerard ter Borch at Deventer. After settling in the Hague in 1662, Netscher quickly established himself as a favorite portraitist among the aristocratic class.ProvenanceD.A. Hoogendijk, Amsterdam Holland
