Descriptiontaken for an article in W magazineLabel TextMartin (1912-2004) was a prominent Minimalist painter who pursued a quiet purity in life parallel to the contemplative simplicity of her art. By the end of the 1960s she gave up television, radio, and newspapers, distancing herself from the social life that stimulated her artist colleagues. When her New York City building was slated for demolition, she moved to the country near Taos, New Mexico. In response to the delicate southwestern light, Martin adopted pastel hues for the ruled lines and austere grids of her images. Carucci began taking photographs at fifteen, eventually receiving a degree from Bezalel Academy, Israel’s national school of fine art and design. Carucci is best known for photographing the intimate life of her immediate family, including the erotic and the melancholy. In addition to her own work, Carucci freelances for commercial publications; this portrait of Martin was taken for an article in W magazine.
