Label TextIn June 1972 five men were arrested breaking into Democratic national headquarters at the Watergate building in Washington. They admitted working for the Committee to Re-Elect the President, but Nixon won reelection in the fall. Attempts to cover up the incident prompted a Senate investigation, which uncovered further illegal activities. After the House Judiciary Committee voted to impeach Nixon, the President announced his resignation. His defiant wave as he boarded the helicopter to leave the White House on August 9, 1974, came to symbolize political arrogance. On View
