Label TextWomen became a powerful political force in the 1960s. In 1961 Bella Abzug and Dagmar Wilson founded “Women Strike for Peace” to press for a ban on nuclear testing. They were among the first to oppose the Vietnam War. They also inspired “Another Mother for Peace,” founded in California in 1967. To inform Congress of the growing antiwar spirit they launched a peace card campaign for Mother’s Day in 1967. Legislators received hundreds of thousands of cards, designed by artist Lorraine Schneider, with the slogan “War is not healthy for children and other living things.”
