DescriptionStatue of St. George in Gothic armor carved in fruitwood. Traces of paint are visible at the eyes.
Label TextSt. George is shown here standing on a rather undersize version of the dragon he slays in his legend. He was also a patron saint of soldiers. Here he is shown in the armor of a late medieval knight, rendered in loving detail down to the buckles, straps, hinges, and rivets that hold the suit together.ProvenanceSold at Archduke Leopold Salvator sale at Anderson Galleries, NY, January 20, 1927, to agent who returned it to Austria.
