DescriptionThrusting tip of flattened diamond section with baluster below; blade of crescent-moon form; somewhat bulbous fluke. Axe and fluke executed with elaborate openwork.Label TextHalberds had been an important battlefield weapon in the late Middle Ages, but by the time this one was made they were increasingly serving as badges of rank. The axehead on this one has become more decorative than functional, and the beak in back is no longer designed for piercing armor. Only the thrusting tip retains some functionality.ProvenancePurchased by John W. Higgins on August 20, 1929 from Liberty & Co. Ltd., London. Given to the Museum on December 15, 1931.Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014
