DescriptionSteel. Long quadrangular spike, of hexagonal section at its base, with long flat downturned fluke, pierced with holes; opposed by deep crescentic axe blade drawn into decorative cusps above & below & pierced with 2 triangular groups of 3 holes each. Open socket with square ring at base, extending down as pair of long langets with separate pair of langets on sides.Secured to old wooden staff of flattened octagonal section by brass capped iron nails. Upper 1/3 of staff studded with similarly capped tacks. Restored (?) green tassel at base of head.
ProvenanceEdward Hubbard Litchfield collection purchased by Museum from Parke-Bernet Galleries, NY on December 5, 1951, sale no. 1293. Price of $50 for lot which included HAM#'s 2968.1-3. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
