Label TextThe spetum is a derivative of earlier spears having a crossbar at the base of the head. By expanding the points of the crossbar and turning them forward, the spetum gains the possibility of controlling the opponent's weapon. But the practical applications seem to have been limited, and the weapon was used for only a brief time, during the 1500s.ProvenancePurchased by John W. Higgins on August 20, 1929 from Liberty & Co. Ltd., London. Given to the Museum on July 1, 1954.Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
