DescriptionSingle-edged blade except for last 8" from point where it is double edged to tip. Full-length fuller near back edge of both faces. Reinforcing plate on both faces with stylized floral terminals; flare to form crossguard topped by double "shell"-shaped steel guard extending into wide knuckle bow that tapers into deep discoid pommel with domed insert & circular curved spike with blunted point. Steel diamond-shaped grip swollen at center.
Label TextThe hilt of this sword is of a traditional Indian type, with a roof-shaped handguard, a pommel spike, and a handguard--often called the "Hindu basket hilt." But the blade is imported from Europe, giving this style of sword its name, which means "foreign."ProvenanceAnonymous gift to the Museum on February 1, 1934.
