DescriptionElements from 1600s-1800s. Double edged blade having reinforced pointed tip with raised central rib & 2 fullers on each side of rib on both faces. Very fine steel gauntlet hilt in typically South Indian style, pierced in geometric chevron designs. Gauntlet sweeps upward & away from elbow with circular knob at end. Beaded edge. Brown-mottled textile lining. Plates of gauntlet have been secured to each other with later scalloped iron plates. These appear to be of better workmanship than the disk at the end of the gauntlet, which may suggest 2 separate stages of compositing.ProvenancePurchased by Museum from American Art Association, Anderson Galleries (NYC), Macomber sale, December 10-12, 1936, (lot 335).Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
