DescriptionThis picture shows two traditional house entrance decorations for the New Year. To the right is the “gate pine” (kadomatsu) arrangement of pine, bamboo and other materials used to welcome ancestral spirits. On the left, braided rice straw, bitter orange and greenery form the shimekazari which repels bad spirits and invites the Shintō deities to visit.
