Description1 piece iron. Repousse dragon and water or clouds over entire helmet. Brass inlay on eyes of dragon. Remains of lacquer on underside. 4 loops underneath once secured a padded headband, from which the chinstrap was suspended.
Label TextHelmets like these were worn by footsoldiers and by traveling samurai. Finer versions for ceremonial purposes were made with lacquered leather or wood. This jingasa has an embossed dragon and clouds, a common pairing in Japanese art.ProvenancePurchased by Museum at the Morosini sale #3986 at the American Art Association (NYC), October 10-15, 1932, lot #171.
