The Salisbury estate included an orchard, gardens, and seven greenhouses, all overseen by Frederick Coulson's father, John Coulson. This, the largest of the greenhouses built for Stephen II, stood next to the Salisbury House. Having grown up on the Salisbury estate, Frederick Coulson was clearly at home in the main greenhouse, taking advantage of its natural light for photographing a wide range of subjects.
