DescriptionPhotograph from an album of 208 cyanotypes on cream wove paper.Coulson placed a backdrop in the Salisbury greenhouse to create portraits of family and friends. His numerous cyanotypes of these three girls suggest that they are his sisters (from left to right), Lucy, Mary, and Elizabeth, who would have been thirteen, fourteen, and twelve years old at the time. Here, in early September, the young girls, each of whom holds a book under her arms and displays a large, decorated straw hat, appear ready for school Their outfits may well be the work fo their mother or of John Coulson's relative Abbie B. Coulson, a dressmaker, who at the time was living with the family.
