Label TextSon of the woodcutter and printer Jan Ewoutsz. Muller, Harmen became a prominent engraver and publisher in Amsterdam. His shop in Warmoesstraat, De Vergulde Passer—“at the gilded compasses”—often had commissions from publishers Hieronymous Cock and Christophe Plantin. This plate reflects Muller’s connections to Antwerp, and to Flemish artists in Italy. Between 1567 and 1577, Stradanus designed cartoons for a series of hunting tapestries for granduke Cosimo I de Medici’s villa at Poggio a Caiano. The images were so successful he did two more series, and sent drawings north to be engraved.ProvenancePurchased from Hill-Stone, Inc., New York, NY. Charlotte E.W. Buffington FundOn View
