Label TextThis painting is signed with a monogram at the lower center. It is undated but was probably painted late in the 1640s. It presents not only a lovely landscape but also many accurate and homey details of life in Holland in winter; notice the boat frozen into the ice of the canal and the man who carries a bundle of firewood on his back.
The birthplace of Aert van der Neer is not known, but he moved to Amsterdam, probably in the early 1630s, and began his painting career there. His first dated landscape was made in 1635. He is best known for his winter landscapes and nocturnal scenes in which he achieves a luminosity and delicate color harmony which are virtually unmatched by his contemporaries. His talent was unrecognized during his lifetime, and he was frequently in financial difficulty.ProvenanceEdward Speelman Ltd, London EnglandOn View
