Label TextPresented from a high vantage point on the New Jersey side of the rocky Palisades, Hassam’s composition is dominated by the Hudson River. He achieved the tamped-down effect on the water by layering blue and yellow-green washes. He then applied an absorptive sponge or fiber to create texture. The flattened surface of the water stands in stark contrast to the irregular, quick brushstrokes used for the foliage, a technique known as scumbling.Provenance(Montross Gallery, New York, 1917);On View
