Label TextAlthough this portrait cannot be identified, the facial features – knitted eyebrows, lined forehead, and deep-set eyes – are typical of the emotionally expressive and individualized portraits of third-century soldier emperors. From the middle of the third century onwards there was a rapid succession of rulers. These worn and anxious faces reflect this civil unrest.ProvenanceMuseum purchase from Alfredo Barsanti, Rome, Italy
