Label TextShirin Questions Shapur is from a poem entitled Khusraw and Shirina romance of the Persian King Khusraw Parvis and the Armenian Princess Shirin. This painting depicts the moment when the princess, sitting admist the flower-filled landscape, sees the king's portraitand asks the painter who is portrayed . "The delicacy of that auspicious image stayed the painter's hand and tongue." "Shapur recovers and greets Shirin, and aftwe she is seated, he sits down next to her. shirin asks him: 'who are you where do you come from, why do I know you?' Shapur replies that he has travelled widely and that he knows the secrets of many problems. Shirin asks him what he knows about painting." The calligraphic page is from the second poem, Khusraw and Shirin. It is not part of the romantic narrative, but belongs to the afterword, concerning Tughril Shah's request of the Persian poet Nizami (d. about 1209) and Nizami's regrets on the death of Shams al-Din Muhammad Jahan Pahlavan.
