Label TextPsychologist Timothy Leary (1920–1996) studied the effects of psychoactive drugs in projects like the Harvard Psilocybin Project, and advocated their possible benefits. Public interest became widespread at a time when substances like psilocybin and LSD were legal. When these drugs captured the attention of illicit dealers, Leary was dismissed from his job as a Harvard psychology professor. His struggles to continue research with private funding were hampered by overzealous law enforcement, and he tried in vain to protect himself with public renown.
